Climate Stress Spells Cycles of Distress for Farmers

Climate Stress Spells Cycles of Distress for Farmers

As climate disasters increase, so too does the cost associated with them. A new UN report on disaster risk reduction shows that disaster events across the world have steadily increased over the past few decades and they are only predicted to grow in regularity, to the point where we will soon be facing 1.5 disasters each day across the world.

The average number of disaster events per year between 1980 and 1999 was 200, and in 2015 there were 400. By 2030, the number of disasters may balloon to upwards of 560 per year and the average trends suggest a 30% increase from 2000 to 2030.

Of those evacuees, The Fiji Times is reporting, 200 include “climate change refugees in Dreketi who were relocated more than a year ago” in the wake of cyclone Ana last year. The 200 villagers were relocated last from Navabatu last January after the storm’s impact sustained cracks in infrastructure.

Rohingya Displaced Pay Heaviest Price in Slowed Pandemic Response and Climate Crisis

As has been our advocacy message about climate displacement risks, refugees are amongst the most vulnerable of the frontline communities to climate shocks and risks, spending year after year exposed to extreme rains and cyclones in Bangladesh with no access to storm shelters. The Covid-19 pandemic response proves no different.

WEEKEND FEATURE: Conflict, Disasters, and Oil Companies Bring Disaster to Mozambique

Climate change begins when fossil fuels are taken from the ground and commodified, a process run by some of the most profitable corporations in the world. While we often focus on the effects of climate change on populations worldwide, the extractive practices that cause climate change often wreak unimaginable damage on nations of the Global South that already suffer the worst impacts of intensifying natural disasters and weather extremes.

Over 10 Million Displaced in Six Months Reveals Vulnerabilities of Climate Risks & Fragility

Last month, a report by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), revealed a shocking new statistic: 10.3 million people had been displaced due to climate change-induced events in just the last six months. A further 2.3 million more were displaced by conflict, indicating the vast majority of internal displacement is now triggered by climate change. Over 60% of those displaced were from countries in Asia that produced less than one percent of the total global CO2 emissions in 2019, further supporting climate justice calls that the countries least responsible for the climate crisis are amongst the most vulnerable to its consequences.
